The Banana Juice Treatment

August 25, 2015

IMG_1115When I was a high school teacher, many of my students’ lives were in constant turmoil. One particular girl, Jenny (not her real name), would come to my office when everything seemed to be falling apart for her. And when things were really rough, I had just the solution.

I don’t remember how it started, but somehow I learned she really liked a particular kind of banana juice. So I went to the store and stocked up on this juice and kept it in my desk drawer. When Jenny was having a difficult day, she would head for my office and a bottle of banana juice. On really bad days, while she was drinking the juice we would sit on the floor, lean back against the file cabinets, and stay there until the crisis didn’t seem quite so bad any more and she was ready to go back out and face the world.

Recently I had lunch with Jenny, who is now a beautiful young woman, poised, successful, and certainly no longer in need of banana juice. We reminisced about those days and chuckled about the banana juice.

Thinking about this later, I realized that God is exactly the same way with us. There was nothing magic about the banana juice, but it meant something to Jenny at the time. It symbolized comfort and made her feel cared about. For me, it was a blessing to be able to help her. That’s how God is. He knows just what we need, just what will help us through our crisis. He will sit with us and stay there until the crisis doesn’t seem so bad after all.

God’s care for us is way better than what I was able to provide for Jenny. His love and grace is never ending. There were a couple of times I ran out of banana juice, and there were times I simply could not take the time to sit on the floor with Jenny. But God always has time for us. The banana juice represents something different for each one of us, but whatever it is, God it never runs out of it. What an awesome God we have!

Between Life and Death

August 20, 2015

IMG_1113This is Banias in northern Israel. Another name for it is Caesarea Philippi, and it was one of the most thought-provoking sites we visited. The natural spring here is the primary source of water for the Jordan River. However, that is not its only significance. It was here that Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” The story is found in Matthew 16:13-20.

During Jesus’ time there were many pagan temples here. The painting below shows how it would have looked during that time. Now all that remains is a rock wall and the floors of the temples.

No wonder Jesus chose this place to ask that question. The disciples would have seen all of the people going in and out of the temples to worship their gods and idols. There they stood between springs of living water and the worship of dead idols –between representations of life and death. There, after they told Him what other people said, He asked them the most important question of His entire ministry. “But who do you say that I am?”

This is still the most important question we must answer today: who do we say that He is? When Peter blurted out the answer. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,”IMG_1114 Jesus told him that God had revealed that truth to him. And it is God who reveals the same truth to us more than 2,000 years later.

When we realize who He is, we have no problem placing our trust in Him. Peter and the other disciples had only the Old Testament Scriptures, pointing forward to the coming of Messiah. How amazing it must have been to suddenly realize that they were seeing those Scriptures fulfilled right in their midst.

Today, in addition to the Old Testament, we have the four Gospels and the rest of the New Testament to reveal Jesus’ identity to us. As Paul says in Romans 1:20, we are without excuse if we do not recognize this truth, that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

I’m On My Way!

August 13, 2015

Up In the AirExciting news today! Yesterday I signed a contract with Life Sentence Publishing, Inc. (www.anekopress.com) to publish A Widow’s Might: The Secret of Finding Strength in God. I met the publisher in the cafeteria lunch line at the writers’ conference I attended in June. Although I was very tired from my trip to Israel, I really felt I needed to go to that conference, and I’m so glad I did. This will be a whole new adventure for me. The first step was sending them my completed manuscript, which I did this morning. I’ll be sharing the journey with you as I go along.

About the Book: A Widow’s Might shows how a frustrating ten-week stint in the hospital with my husband became a turning point in my 40-year walk with the Lord. As I drew closer to God than ever before, and He drew nearer to me, He removed all fear, giving me strength to face the challenges ahead. When Alan died, instead of falling apart I continued in that strength.

My journey as a single woman has been an exciting adventure. The book combines my story with lessons that teach how all of us can experience God’s love and strength in our everyday lives. Some parts of it were agonizing to write, but I simply had to share how understanding God’s goodness and grace revolutionized my life, and how every believer can enjoy a full, rich, victorious life in Him.

I’m also launching a speaking ministry, so please let me know of any church or other group who might be looking for a speaker, and I’ll contact them. Thank you.

Measuring Up

August 12, 2015

DanDrivingDuring most of the 2000’s it seemed every time we turned around we were buying a new car. Each time we did, I took a picture of our grandson Danny (who is now in high school) behind the wheel. It’s fun to look at those early photos and see how he grew from year to year.

I like to look back over the last few years and see how I’ve grown, too. I can’t measure it with pictures, though. In Ephesians 4:13 we are told to “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (NIV). The following verses describe how this maturity looks. “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves,” and we will “speak the truth in love” and walk in unity with other believers.

Of course I fall short in many areas, and I know I’ll never attain the completeness spoken of in these verses. Yet, I want to be sure I’m moving toward it. I find comfort in knowing that God has not let me stay the same as I was. He has given me exciting, challenging things to do that I could never accomplish on my own, helping me grow in my trust of Him. He has provided experiences, like my trip to Israel, that expand my knowledge and understanding of Him. And He has walked with me through situations I could never have anticipated, bringing me out of them stronger and more sure of His love and grace than ever before.

The Holy Spirit has been my comforter, teacher, and helper as promised in John 16. God’s love and His ways of showing it continue to amaze me. As I look back over these last few years, I can say, like the Apostle Paul, “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me” (Philippians 3:12). My favorite Bible teacher says it this way: “I haven’t arrived yet, but praise God I’ve left the station!” And, I might add, I’m on the right track!
